How Old Do You Need To Be To Become A Personal Trainer?

Becoming a personal trainer is a great idea if you’re a young person looking for a way to support themselves while they’re going to school. With the low initial requirements to get a job as a personal trainer it’s easy to get the qualifications needed to become one. If you’re a young person who wants to get started as a personal trainer an important thing to know is how old you need to be to become a personal trainer.

Although there is no national standard for personal trainer qualifications most certification programs and gyms will require their personal trainers to be past a certain age. The most common requirement to become a personal trainer is to be at least 18 years of age and have graduated high school. There are a number of reasons for the age requirement including maturity, physical ability, and insurance.

Most people who have reached 18 years of age and have graduated high school will be more mature and responsible then the would have been when they were younger. As gyms are a service industry, it’s important that gyms hire employees who will properly represent the organization. Although there are exceptions, younger employees don’t typically hold themselves to the same degree of professionalism as older trainers might.

As personal trainers often have to work with heavy weight and plates they must be physically capable of assisting their clients if they begin to have trouble. Young people are still physically developing and don’t reach a mature level of fitness until they are around 18 years old.

Insurance companies will also not sell liability insurance to gyms that employ trainers who are under 18 years of age. Due to type of advice offered by personal trainers to their clients insurance companies require that they be of adult age.
